PNG is a lossless format: it preserves every pixel exactly, with no re-compression. That makes it the right choice when you intend to edit an image later or save it repeatedly, because every JPG save degrades the picture a little and that loss accumulates.

One point is worth stating plainly, because it's widely misunderstood: converting JPG to PNG does not improve the image or recover detail that was lost when it was first saved as JPG. What it does is lock in the current quality and prevent any further loss going forward.

Expect the file to get bigger after converting, sometimes substantially. That's normal — PNG doesn't trade data for size. If file size matters more to you than preserving every pixel, stay with JPG and use the image compressor instead.

Frequently asked questions

No. Detail lost when the image was saved as JPG cannot be recovered by any conversion. Converting preserves what is there now and prevents further loss on future saves.

Because PNG stores every pixel without discarding anything, while JPG shrinks files precisely by throwing detail away. A larger file is a sign the conversion worked as it should.

No. PNG supports transparency, but converting doesn't create it. A JPG contains no transparency information at all — removing a background needs a dedicated tool.

Yes — select multiple files and all of them are converted, then download them together in a single ZIP.
